Coast Guard station opened at Nizampatnam, In a glittering ceremony, the Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday commissioned a new station at Nizampatnam, in Guntur district.

Visakhapatnam: In a glittering ceremony, the Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday commissioned a new station at Nizampatnam, in Guntur district. The station will oversee maritime and coastal, security/safety issues and carry out monitoring and surveillance of merchant traffic/ fishing vessels close to the coast.

The station is part of the ongoing efforts by the Coast Guard to strengthen security along the coastline. It will help augment patrolling along the east coast and prevent illicit activity, such as infiltration and smuggling.

Addressing the commissioning ceremony, Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director- General, Indian Coast Guard, dwelt upon the need for maintaining continuous vigil along the coastal and maritime borders. He called for continued synergy and coordination between various agencies involved in coastal and maritime security.

He stated that the Coast Guard had initiated several far-reaching projects to augment force levels as also manpower to meet existing and future maritime challenges. He reviewed the impressive guard of honour presented by the Coast Guard personnel.

The function was hosted by Inspector-General Satya Prakash Sharma, Commander Coast Guard Region (East). Several senior officials of the Central and State governments, other armed forces and Coast Guard attended.

Guarding SEZs
Addressing a meeting in the Coast Guard regional office in Guntur, Vice Admiral Thapalyal said the Centre was taking effective measures to strengthening the Coast Guard Services for guarding exclusive special economic zones (SEZs). The Coast Guard had been given the mandate to guard SEZs. The Nizamapatnam station was the fourth in Andhra Pradesh and 42nd in the country. He said during the past 22 months, the Coast Guard personnel rescued 46 persons in distress in the sea, including fishermen in the Zone. Rachana Thapalyal unveiled the emblem of the Coast Guard. Repalle MLA A. Satya Prasad and RDO G. Narsimhulu were present.
