As part of improving transport facilities in the capital region, RTC city buses will soon ply through Guntur. Currently, the city only has private services that operate decrepit buses. Soon minibuses of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) will be crisscrossing the city's lanes.
Transport minister Sidda Raghava Rao stated that the APSRTC will get 1,100 new buses and 30 Volvo buses apart from a substantial number of mini-buses on the lines of the SETWIN buses in Hyderabad. The minister stated that the minibuses will be able to access the streets and lanes and suburban areas of the city easily.
“Due to limited operations of private buses, the local people are mostly depending upon the share auto-rickshaws. The small buses can easily negotiate turns in the overcrowded roads of the city,” the minister said. As part of security measures in the RTC buses, CCTV cameras will be installed. Tracking system in 1,537 buses will be installed.
“The entire transport infrastructure will be given a facelift, including improvement of roads for making travel comfortable. All bad roads in the city will be improved and the government is giving top priority to boost transport infrastructure facilities in the new capital region,” the minister added.
RTC regional manager PV Rama Rao told the Vijayawada Hans that RTC officials would conduct a survey of the city's needs and the number of buses that would be required. “A report would be submitted to the transport minister in this regard. The city will also get JNNURM buses, which will be used for connecting the city to sub-urban areas. According to indications the new buses might reach Guntur by March next year.”
The city's passenger traffic position and the modes of transportation used by commuters will be studied, and accordingly recommendations will be made to the RTC.
