Srikakulam: There is widespread concern among the people over the reports of the government planning to set up a mega thermal power station with a generating capacity of 4,000 MW. The people in Somepet mandal rose in revolt when the previous government proposed to establish a thermal power station there. The police had to open fire at the mobs that went on the rampage.

The people were, however, pacified by Minister Atchannanaidu by telling that they was no proposal to establish thermal station in Somepet area. Now the reports suggested that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, during his visit to Japan, had entered into an agreement with a company there for establishment of thermal power station in Srikakulam district.

Government Chief Whip K Ravi Kumar explained that the Andhra Pradesh GENCO would build the thermal power station in the surrounding of SM Puram under Ponduru mandal. The thermal power station would be built with latest technology and even coal would be imported for power generation, he said. The imported coal would release only 12 per cent ash, he said. If 6 s of water was made available, as much Rs 30 crore investment can be attracted to set up industries, he added.
