The PIL bench of the High Court at Hyderabad on Monday voiced dismay at the manner in which the police of Vijayawada were trying to eat into the rights of the residents. The bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sen Gupta and Justice P V Sanjay Kumar took on file a writ plea filed by advocate Chinranjeevi, challenging the notification issued by the police of the city which required everyone to carry identity proof during night travel in the city.

Hyderabad: The PIL bench of the High Court at Hyderabad on Monday voiced dismay at the manner in which the police of Vijayawada were trying to eat into the rights of the residents. The bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sen Gupta and Justice P V Sanjay Kumar took on file a writ plea filed by advocate Chinranjeevi, challenging the notification issued by the police of the city which required everyone to carry identity proof during night travel in the city.

The Chief Justice voiced surprise and wondered “if we were in a state of emergency.” The bench pointed to the condition that each person would have to inform the police of their purpose of being on the road. The Chief Justice pointed out that the order of November 24 as unconstitutional and an attack on civil liberties of the citizens.

The action of the government in the name of law and order did not find favour with the bench. The plea that a new capital was being built and a new state is to see the growth of a new capital did not convince the court of the ‘new ideas’ in dealing with law and order.

The bench, however, made clear that such precautions as necessary would be the responsibility of the police to ensure law and order in the city. Vijayawada Bureau adds

There was all-round criticism against the move by the police asking the citizens to carry ID proof during their night travel. The police claimed that the measure was put in place for the safety of people at night. But the police on the streets at night made life of people visiting the city miserable.

Citizens denounced the police for imposing restriction on the movement of people on the streets during night. The police also forced the people, who were found moving during nights, to give their fingerprints too, apart from demanding that they show their ID proof.
