Tirupati: Intensifying its effort to improve sanitation and upkeep of the town, the Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) has resolved to extend the door-to-door garbage collection so as to cover every household in the town under the scheme.

The door-to-door garbage collection though in force is not effective with considerable number of households still disposing their waste in the dustbins or throwing in the open places or roadside marring the clean look of the town.

But the TMC, which is keen to do away with dustbins to make the pilgrim town a dustbin-free city, has drawn a plan to ensure door-to-door garbage collection along with segregation of the waste into wet and dry from the all the households in the city.

As per the plan every division has been divided into six groups each comprising 300-350 houses formed into a unit for door-to-door garbage collection. One health worker will be deputed to each unit for the daily garbage collection from the 300-350 houses in his unit. In other words six health workers will be allotted in each division to carry out the door-to-door garbage collection while a supervisor will be in charge of the group (six health workers) to oversee the door-to-door garbage collection.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner T Sakala Reddy said the corporation has determined to execute the door-to-door garbage collection in a foolproof manner.

The health department staff will take the responsibility of introducing the heath worker to all the families (houses) in his unit giving them the details of him as well as his group head, including their names, mobile numbers etc, he said explaining about the novel sanitation initiative for betterment and upkeep of the town and also proper disposal of the waste.

In addition to this, health worker, group head concerned with door-to-door garbage collection, a select group of senior officers from other than health department will be deputed to monitor the garbage collection and look into complaints from the households, he said.

He added that based on the details provided to the residents, they can immediately approach the supervisor or the monitoring officers over phone in case if the worker failed to turn up in the morning for collection of garbage.

He said that formation of the houses into groups, division-wise was completed in the old corporation area, while the separation of the houses into groups in the three newly merged grama panchayats is under progress, after which the health workers (total 300) will be deputed.

Purchase of pushcarts, to be provided to each sanitary worker for collection of garbage from the houses, is underway, he added.

After the preparations, which were in full swing, the door- to-door garbage scheme would take off from the New Year, he said.
