Anaparthi (East Godavari): About forty tonnes of fish worth about Rs 20 lakh were killed in a fish pond in Komaripalem village of Bikkavolu mandal in the district due to poisoning on Friday.

The pond belonged to a dalit farmer Chelle Srinu who took it on lease and started aquaculture for the past two and half years. He was growing the pankaj (Jella) type of fish.

Sreenu’s family members were shell-shocked when they found the fish dead in the pond on Friday morning.

Sreenu decided to sell the fish during the month end and use the money for performing a marriage. As the news spread like wildfire in the village, DSP Ravindranath rushed to the spot to review the situation.

The honorary president of the State Panchayatraj department Padala Venkatrama Reddy also visited the family to console them. He demanded stringent action against those who indulged in the heinous act. The government should pay adequate compensation to the family which incurred heavy losses, he said.
