Ever since the Union Government promised special status for Andhra Pradesh after bifurcating to it create Telangana, even Telangana has started demanding special status. Tamil Nadu too joined the race and Bihar chief minister promised his support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi if Bihar was accorded a special status.

This is not the first time that states have demanded Union Government to grant special status for them. Jammu and Kashmir is a classic case of seeking special status. Whenever the Centre presents budget, states demand special financial package, or declaration from the centre for backward states.
But the question is whether special status to states really help in their development. Though many times the Union Government promised funds and other projects for their development, they did not materialise. Chattisgarh, Jharkhand,Uttarakhand and other small states were promised special status and though it was accorded, the states remained under developed as funds did not come as promised by the Union Government. So special status or not, it all depends on leadership of the states to get projects' clearance from Union Government and implement for the development and benefit of the people.
