Ongole: Prakasam district is racked by severe drought conditions leading to misery for farmers and agriculture workers. Scanty rainfall in the district has resulted in crops wilting and water sources drying up. The farmers in the district have been plagued by one or other disaster for last five years. Series of cyclones devastated crops in the district and this year it was drought that ravaged the livelihood of farmers and farm workers.

  • Farmers, farm workers live in misery
  • Govt declares 54 of 56 mandals as drought-hit
  • But there are no perceptible steps to alleviate sufferings of people

Despite the statements by leaders, expressing their sympathies to farmers over the loss of their crops and their livelihood, no perceptible steps have so far been taken by the government to wipe the tears of the face of the farmers. Dried and cracked earth is visible on farm lands everywhere. The government has already declared 54 of total 56 mandals as drought-affected. As the kharif crops dried up, the farmers have expected that the government would ensure release of Sagar water to revive the rural economy. But the hope nourished by farmers of getting Sagar water has proved to be mirage.

With the drought conditions expanding across the district, the farmers are pushed further deeper into debt. Each farmer has invested not less than Rs 25,000 on each acre to raise crops. Most of the farmers have borrowed from local moneylenders. They are now unable even to pay interest on the loans borrowed from moneylenders. The area under paddy crop has come down. The normal area under paddy in the district is 4.5 lakh acres. Even half of the area has been covered during the kharif season. Farm lands in several areas have been fallow as Sagar water did not reach the tail-end regions.
