Eluru: Cocks fight to greet the first visit of AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to Chataparru village in West Godavari district on New Year’s Day to participate in Sankranti Sambaralu even after the direction of the State High Court banning the cock fights. Despite the ban, the local leaders have organised cock fights as part of the celebrations. However, most part of the Sambaralu, including cock fights, were over by the time Naidu reached the village in the evening. The Sambaralu were supervised by TDP leader Maganti Babu.
When asked, officials said that they have not violated any law nor have they gone against the court directive. Officials said cock fights as such were not illegal. If cock fight consists of using knives and involves betting then it becomes illegal. In this case, they have not used any knives nor any betting was involved. It was just a game and that too for a short time which happens to be the tradition of the region during Sankranti, they added.
Later, Naidu addressed a public meeting in the village and interacted with villagers and schoolchildren. All the arrangements were reviewed by the District Collector Katamaneni Bhaskar. A big stall on the concept of ‘Smart Village’ was also set up at the venue of the Chief Minister’s programme.
