The popular Ramakrishna beach road was shattered by huge waves which almost vanished at sevaral points of the coastal state high way sending alarming bells and forcing the civic authorities to shut down a part of the beach, disappointing all tourists and week end revelers..Sea water surged even up to the famous Submarine museum set up on the beach .'If cyclone Hudhud cut our business by 75%,this coastal erosion has hit our livelihood squarely said a food court owner on the famous Ramakrishna beach ,

The Andhra Pradesh Government has set up a committee comprising of experts from National Institute of Ocean Technology, National Institute of Oceanography, APSRAC,Andhra University, IIT Chennai and various ports to combat the distressing but natural phenomenon of high tides eroding most of the embankment of the popular Ramakrishna (RK) Beach .

Several scientists have blamed the concrete jungles along the coastline. Environment scientist and Head of Environmental Department at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam KVSR Prasad said that coastal erosion is a completely man-made problem caused by the breakwater systems of the industries in the Port. Breakwater systems arrest the movement of sand particles and lead to coastal erosion,” Prasad said.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to give top priority was to strengthen the sea boundaries from Rushikonda to Visakhapatnam city as it was the IT corridor of the east coast

Experts in Oceanography say that coastal erosion has occurred in 172 locations in the coast line between Kolkatta and Kerala in the recent past at a dangerous pace.While some places are witnessing heavy erosion, some are witnessing heavy deposits of sand, they said. Visakhapatnam MP K. Hari Babu said that the gap between the coastal road and the sea was earlier 200 meters but now has dropped to just 50 meters.

Coastal erosion is not a new phenomena on the east coast which lacked corals and was also denied of mangroves and shallow waters except for the swamps of Srikakulam and Nellore .In early 70's the Channa Reddy government had raised world bank funds to build retaining walls in most of shore line of Krishna, Guntur and Visakhapatnam to contain sea erosion. " We built retaining walls of about 25 km in the Krishna and Guntur district "says a district official .
