Vijayawada/Eluru/Rajahmundry: As people on street corners lit bhogi fires (bonfires), organisers were busy organising cockfights in the State, especially in Krishna, West and East Godavari districts, notwithstanding a court ban on them. Sankranti gaiety had the better of people’s caution which was thrown to the wind. And leading the festivities were none other than the elected representatives whose presence sort of gave legal sanctity to the blood sport.

In Vijayawada, MP Kesineni Srinviasa Rao, Narasapur MP Gokaraju Gangaraju, Vijayawada (central) MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohana Rao and his wife Anuradha, the chairperson of Krishna Zilla Parishad, took part in the revelry and kicked off the cockfights. The Vijayawada cops, who zealously put undue restrictions on people’s movements during night and were pulled up by the court, turned a blind to the cockfights.

Spurs were tried to legs of the roosters before being released into ring to take on each other in a fierce fight. A large number of people thronged Gayatrinagar in the city where the cockfights were organised with impunity.In Krishna district, cockfights are organised everywhere. Reports from Mylavaram, Machilipatnam, Gudivada and Kaikluru said people took part in them with gay abandon. In Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, “houseful” notice boards were hung in front of all lodging houses. Organisers of cockfights and punters converged on this small town.
