Visakhapatnam: Traders, particularly timber merchants, from the city, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, are in elated mood as direct flight services to Kuala Lumpur by Malindo Air is being launched. This is the third international flight to be launched from February 15. The city has direct services to Dubai being operated by Air India and Singapore by Silk Air.

Mallindo Air will operate its Kuala Lumpur flight thrice in a week. It will take off at 11. 55pm from the city and land in Kuala Lumpur at 6. 10 am the following day. The merchants earlier used to fly to Myanmar, Malaysia, Africa either from Hyderabad or Chennai but after introduction of Silk Air, the travelling time and costs have come down.

“But with the direct flight to Kuala Lumpur, the travelling would be much easier,’’ said S K Singhal, a leading plywood merchant of the city. He told this correspondent that neither the government nor the travel agents knew about presence of hundreds of traders from Chhattisgarh and Odisha flying from the city.

Other than the traders, many tourists from these two neighbouring states keep flying to Malaysia who now would enjoy the direct flight, he added Singhal said the traders also visit Bali and other areas in Indonesia where they get premium verities of timber at lower costs. The local traders import around 18,000 cubic meters of ply from Malaysia.

Mani Pradeep, a frequent traveller to Asian countries said the holiday revellers now flying to Bangkok via Kolkota and Hyderabad can now use Malindo Air to reach Bangkok and save nearly 12 hours of journey and some money. Air Asia also had plans to operate flight thrice a week from Vizag to Kuala Lumpur. The Air Asia flight was supposed to be introduced in October but it was delayed due to Hudhud. The Air Asia is expected to announce its Kula Lumpur flight schedule very soon.
