Velivennu (West Godavari): “I have visualised the Smart Village programme to eradicate poverty in the State and eliminate social and economic inequalities in society. I will strive to ensure that Andhra Pradesh achieves growth on all fronts. People’s welfare and their prosperity are my priorities,’’ said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu here on Sunday.

Speaking after launching the “Smart Village” programme at Velivennu village under Undrajavaram mandal of Nidadavole Assembly constituency, he said an integrated plan was evolved to develop 12,918 villages in the State as “Smart Villages” in the next five years.

As part of the programme, the Chief Minister set off on 18 km padayatra in West Godavari district.

The “Smart Village” concept would be promoted as a social movement to give fillip to rural development. Focus would be laid on development of basic infrastructure in villages, promotion of education, health and hygiene and total financial inclusion as part of the initiative. Agri-based industries would be set up in villages to utilise locally available raw material and generate employment for rural youth.

In West Godavari district, as many as 903 village panchayats would be developed as “Smart Villages” in the delta region and upland area. Technology would be effectively utilised for rural development, he said.

When local authorities informed the Chief Minister that some poor people in Velivennu village did not have permanent houses, he promised to allot houses for them. Later, he witnessed a PowerPoint presentation on development of Velivennu.

Ministers Peethala Sujatha and Pydikondala Manikyala Rao, MPs M Murali Mohan and Maganti Venkateswara Rao and Gokaraju Ganga Raju, Rajya Sabha member Thota Sitarama Lakshmi, Government Whips Chintamaneni Prabhakar and Angara Rammohan, MLAs B Sesha Rao, B Madhava Naidu, K S Jawahar, Nimmala Ramanaidu, A Radhakrishna, M Srinivasa Rao, M Venkateswara Rao, Zilla Parishad Chairman M Bapiraju, District Collector Katamaneni Bhaskar, District Special Officer Lav Agarwarl, DIG Harikumar, SP Raghuram Reddy and other officials participated in the programme.
