Social Networking Giant Facebook carried out a study called ‘Prepare and Respond’ that analyzes how communities, individuals and governments globally utilize Facebook for emergencies.


With its AP Disaster Management Page on Facebook, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has been lauded for being a role model as the Page was used as a platform to alert people before the cyclone, took complaints, grievances, concerns and informed regarding the relief material availability during the Hudhud cyclone. Also, the page posted pictures of on-ground efforts of the Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu along with the entire administration building relief and rehabilitation efforts.


Local Facebook communities were created through the AP Disaster Management Page thereby monitoring the relief efforts by various volunteer groups.


The report states AP government “Tips for first responders and government agencies” affirming how AP Disaster Management Facebook Page engaged the public in connecting to the community and helping people stay informed and safe. Also, the success of the #HudhudAP hashtag was highlighted that was used widely across social media by people for promoting the cause and seeking Government’s help.
