Anantapur: Doubts are being expressed over the death on Sunday night of Telugu Desam Party activist Naresh (30), the main follower of Penukonda MLA B K Parthasaradhi in Gorantla mandal, near Vanavolu Cross on the Gorantla-Kadiri road. He was allegedly leading a group involved in sand mafia activities, some residents of Gorantla say.

While the police said he was struck down fataly at around 10.30 pm after being hit-and-run motorist, his relatives and friends contended that it was a murder arising out of rivalry between two alleged sand mafia gangs. There was a clash between two groups in 2014. The case is still under investigation by Gorantla police.

The sand mafia is said to be active in Gorantla, taking advantage of heavy demand for sand in Bengaluru. Some local residents alleged to have formed gangs to take up sand smuggling during nights utilising 20 lorries and in the process earning huge money. The police headed by the then SI G T Naidu acted tough with the mafia and kept it under check. The groups are stated to have become active after his transfer.
