Anantapur: District Collector Kona Sasidhar has said that the officials should prepare a comprehensive action plan to save every drop of water and utilise the same properly in the drought-stricken district.

Addressing the officials at a review meeting held at the Collectorate here under the aegis of the Rural Water Supply and sanitation departments on the occasion of World Water Day on Sunday, he said that the government has given permission to desilt 83 lakes and to undertake repairs to 2900 check dams.

The District Collector said that water was being supplied in two instalments to the groundnut crop through community sprinklers to overcome the drought. He said that they were submitting proposals to irrigate 3.5 lakh acres of land through the Handri-Neeva project.

The Collector said that Rs 94 crore has been sanctioned for the Zilla Parishads and Mandal Parishads on the recommendation of the 13th Finance Commission and this amount would be used for providing drinking water to the people. Though the district was facing water scarcity, the officials should take steps to ensure people get adequate quantities of water for drinking purposes.

Presiding over the function, superintending engineer of RWS, Kantha Rao said that the United Nations was celebrating World Water Day from 1983 onwards. He said that it was a valuable resource which should be utilised properly. ZP CEO Ramachandra and DEO Anjaiah and others were present.
