Kakinada: The authorities of AP Road Development Corporation (APRDC) have initiated measures for speedy completion of the World Bank-aided road project in East Godavari. The World Bank sanctioned Rs 318 crore for the development of existing Kakinada- Rajahmundry canal route for a distance of about 65 kilometers to cater to the changing traffic needs.

Though the clearance was given more than three years ago, the authorities noticed the ongoing works at snail’s pace despite the availability of funds. The road works were planned in two phases. Of the total distance of 65 kilometers, the extent of 16 kilometers between Kakinada- Samarla Kota was to be a four lane road and from there up to Vemagiri in Rajahmundry suburbs it would be a 10 meter road with an extension of three meters from the existing seven enter road.

The authorities anticipated the completion of works on or before the Godavari Pushkarams as there are several important pilgrim centres in between the two destinations. The notable among these are Ayyappa Temple at Dwarapudi and Bhimeswara Temple at Samarla Kota besides impotent temples at Biccavole en route G Mamidada. But things did not move the way they wanted.

When contacted the RDC executive engineer John Sudhakar said on Saturday that they were exerting pressure on the contractor for speedy execution of works as there was considerable delay by now. The issue was also brought to the notice of higher ups, he added.
