Participating in the 189th birth anniversary of Mahatma on Saturday, after paying tributes, at this statue, opposite to government general hospital, Kakinada.

Home Minister also said that Pule strived for women upliftment and even started schools exclusively for women. He set an example of sorts by making his wife a teacher in one of the schools 140 years ago. Also speaking on the occasion, State Medical and Health Minister Dr. Kamineni Srinivas said that late Phule also strived for women welfare in the form of education to widows, eradication of child marriages and against untouchability in the society. District collector Arun Kumar also spoke on the occasion, while MPs Thota Narasimham, M.Murali Mohan and others participated.
