Visakhapatnam: The suspense over the election of new general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)) will end on the concluding day of the 21st congress of the party on Sunday and in all probability, Sitaram Yechury, the younger member of the politburo is likely to be the party choice. The way S Ramachandran Pillai dodged questions of reporters at the press conference on Friday leads to the presumption that Yechury could be the unanimous choice to succeed Prakash Karat who completed three terms spanning over a decade.

Reporters grilled Pillai over the selection of the new general secretary and asked him why party’s senior leader Atchyutanandan congratulated Sitaram Yechury and not him. A reporter from a Bengal television channel pointed out that his name did not figure among the list of 15 leaders who would be addressing the public meeting slated to be held on the beach on Sunday evening.

The reporter also reminded him that it was mandatory for the new general secretary to address the public meeting usually held after the congress. To all the questions, Pillai had only one answer that the congress would elect a new central committee which would in turn select or elect the new general secretary. “The post of general secretary is not important for the party unlike other parties,” Pillai said.

Prior to commencement of the 21st congress, the names of Sitaram Yechury (62) and Ramachandran Pillai (77) made round with the West Bengal unit vouching for younger Yechury, who has been advocating alliance with liberal parties for increasing national presence of the party. He is also often compared with former general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet for his organisational skills.

However, if Pillai was made the general secretary, Sitaram Yechury would get a third term in the Rajya Sabha. Never in the past the post of general secretary came up for such intense discussion and debate within the party and outside. It could be due the performance of outgoing secretary Prakash Karat whose decade-old term led to disaster in West Bengal in 2011 and abysmal performance in the 2014 general elections apart from the declining popularity of the party all over the country excepting West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura.
