Former Assam Governor and three-time chief minister of Odisha Janaki Ballabh Patnaik passed away in Tirupati at the age of 89 on Wednesday. Patnaik, who reached the temple city on a three-day visit to attend the convocation of the Rashtriya Sanskirt Vidyapeeth (RSVP) in the capacity as the Chancellor of the university, was staying at the guest house on the university campus from Tuesday.

Tirupati: Former Assam Governor and three-time chief minister of Odisha Janaki Ballabh Patnaik passed away in Tirupati at the age of 89 on Wednesday. Patnaik, who reached the temple city on a three-day visit to attend the convocation of the Rashtriya Sanskirt Vidyapeeth (RSVP) in the capacity as the Chancellor of the university, was staying at the guest house on the university campus from Tuesday.

It was around 11 o clock at night that he complained of severe chest pain and was immediately rushed to the TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences in Tirupati. A team of doctors of the cardiology department at SVIMS under the supervision of SVIMS director and Vice-Chancellor Dr B Vengamma confirmed that JB Patnaik suffered a heart attack, and the team battled for close to four hours to save the veteran leader but in vain. The doctors confirmed that JB Patnaik passed away in the early hours on Tuesday.

The Vice-Chancellor of RSVP Acharya Hare Krishna Satpathy and other professors and leaders of various political parties especially the Congress reached the SVIMS Super Specialty Hospital and mourned the untimely death of the Congress leader. Patnaik was 89 years old and is survived by his wife Jayanti Patnaik, son Pruthvi Ballabh Patnaik and two daughters - Sudatta Patnaik and Supriya Patnaik.

Satpathy termed the demise of the veteran leader as a great loss to the State of Odisha and the nation. He said JB Patnaik, who was born in Puri district on January 3, 1927, started his career as a journalist. Being a Sanskrit scholar, JB Patnaik had written several renowned books, he added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences on the sudden demise of the veteran leader of Odisha. The Prime Minister tweeted: 'Shri JB Patnaik's contribution to Odisha's development will always be remembered. Shri JB Patnaik will be remembered as a pillar of Odisha's politics, a popular leader always connected with people's views and aspirations'. Meanwhile, after the professors and students of RSVP paid their tributes and condolences to the bereaved soul, the mortal remains of JB Patnaik was shifted in a special aircraft to Bhubaneswar later in the day.
