A thunderstorm accompanied by high-velocity winds hit Tirupati and Tirumala throwing normal life out of gear on Wednesday. The weather, which was extremely hot and humid till 2 pm, changed suddenly as heavy and dark water-bearing clouds gathered over the temple towns of Tirumala and Tirupati resulting in a huge cloudburst lasting for more than a couple of hours.

Tirupati: A thunderstorm accompanied by high-velocity winds hit Tirupati and Tirumala throwing normal life out of gear on Wednesday. The weather, which was extremely hot and humid till 2 pm, changed suddenly as heavy and dark water-bearing clouds gathered over the temple towns of Tirumala and Tirupati resulting in a huge cloudburst lasting for more than a couple of hours.


Though the temple towns and some pockets of the semi-arid Chittoor district have been witnessing showers in the last few days, they never witnessed such a powerful gale and thunderbolts as on Wednesday. Most parts of the temple city of Tirupati were inundated with the town's fragile drainage system and the road network failing to cope with the deluge.

The situation was worse at Tirumala as the visiting devotees were put to extreme inconvenience owing to the sudden cloudburst. With storm water flooding the Tirumala temple, fire tenders were roped in by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams officials to pump out the waters. A shelter sheet near the 'Nada Neerajanam' stage collapsed on account of strong winds.The Narayanagiri gardens which was spruced up for hosting the three-day Padmavathi Parinayotsavams was shattered owing to the downpour and strong gales.
