Andhra Pradesh government is upbeat over the Centre’s move to give a fillip to the Inland Water Ways (IWW) to form a National Waterways Grid (NWWG) as it is expected to boost economic activity in the State. Of the six IWWs approved since 1986, the IWW from Kakinada to Puducherry, with a length of about 1078 km is the second largest in the country after the Ganga- Haldia stretch of 1620.

The Kakinada – Puducherry NW-4 extends from Kakinada, traversing on river Godavari through Kakinada and Eluru Canals, from there it enters into Krishna river basin, via Commamuru and Buckingham canal and reaches Puducherry.

According to a senior official in irrigation department, the whole idea is to provide an Integrated National Water Ways Transportation Grid (IWWTG) in the country for cheaper goods transportation and also boosts economic activity that woven around it, by setting up cold storage facilities, dry and transit ports facilities, and interconnecting water ways with rail and road transport and the like.

Against this backdrop, it was identified that the NW-4 provides for a cost effective IWT corridor covering the States of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry, he added. According to the DPR, which was approved in 2008, this water way serves about 19 districts falling on its way of 1078 km. It provides hinterland- connectivity to all the 14 proposed ports and the existing ports like Kakinada, Krishnapatnam, and also, major ports like Chennai and Ennore.

The water way also serves cities and towns like Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Amaravathi (new APs capital). The State government has also asked senior officials of Transport, and Road and Tourism departments to speed up Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) on providing rapid and dedicated road connectivity to the existing and proposed ports as well as tourism projects around the Kakinada- Puducherry Waterway (NW-4).
