Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs M Venkaiah Naidu had a dig at AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi for undertaking padayatra in Telangana State for the cause of farmers. Addressing party workers at Narasaraopeta near here on Friday, Venkaiah Naidu stated that the previous UPA government had the dubious distinction of presiding over suicides of 2 lakh farmers. The padayatra of Rahul Gandhi would have been more relevant during UPA rule.

The timing of Rahul’s padayatra was a belated reaction, he observed. Earlier speaking to the reporters, the Union Minister maintained that the NDA government would not make any amendments to the Land Acquisition Bill introduced in the Parliament.

On the issue of special package to Andhra Pradesh State, Venkaiah Naidu felt that the UPA government should have enacted a law on special package to Andhra Pradesh as the BJP also supported passing of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill to become a law. But, the Congress which had missed a golden opportunity in this regard was now blaming the present NDA government.

On introduction of uniform tax system in the country, the opposition parties, he said, were divided. Replying to a question, the Union Minister said the Union government would release the 14th Finance Commission funds to the states for tiding over their financial problems. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu arrived on Guntur police parade grounds by a special helicopter on Friday morning. State BJP leader Kanna Lakshminarayana and other local leaders welcomed him.
