Leaders cry foul as prices hiked twice within a fortnight

Srikakulam/Vijayawada/Kakinada/Tirupati: The activists of the CPM and the CITU here on Saturday staged demonstration to protest against increase in petrol and diesel prices. They demanded immediate rollback of the increased fuel prices. Criticising the BJP-led NDA government for increasing the petrol price by Rs 3.13 a litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 a litre, CPM leader V Ramana and CITU district secretary D Govind led the party activists in staging protest.


They said the government had hiked the fuel prices steeply twice in just one month. On the occasion, CPM and CITU leaders and activists pulled motorbikes with ropes and shouted slogans against the NDA government. The Vijayawada city unit of CPM held a massive protest against petrol prices hike. The activists burnt the effigy of the government on fire as part of the protest.

Led by CPM city secretary Ch Baburao, the party activists held the protest at the Ansari Park raising slogans against the government for increasing the fuel prices twice within a fortnight. Party leaders Donepudi Kasinath, D Vishnuvardhan, N Prasad, Mujafar Ahmmad, K Sridevi and others were present. The CPM East Godavari unit workers staged dharna at East Godavari Collectorate in Kakinada demanding rollback of both petrol and diesel prices hiked twice within a span of one week.


The activists burnt the effigy of the Union government and raised slogans denouncing the hike. Addressing the dharna, CPM East Godavari district secretariat member T S Prakash alleged that the pro-capitalist government was providing several sops to big industrialists and ignoring the interests of common man.


How can they opt for hike in price of both petrol and diesel to the tune of Rs 7 and Rs 5.50 respectively within a span of one week, he questioned. This rise was affected despite no change in prices in international market. He also alleged that the TDP government in AP was planning to increase taxes through backdoor methods.

Party leaders Duvva Seshu Babji, Palivela Veerababu, Ch Ajay Kumar, CITU district general secretary G Baby Rani and others participated. The fuel price hike by the oil companies’ triggered protests by various political parties in Tirupati on Saturday.The Left parties CPI and CPM staged novel protests while the JSP organised an auto rally in the town condemning the increase in the fuel prices.
