Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has locked horns with Telangana on the issue of admissions into National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal. The Telangana State government claims that 50 per cent of NIT seats are reserved for Telangana students and suggests AP students to compete for the remaining 50 per cent seats.

AP HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao told The Hans India that his state would give up its claim to NIT Warangal seats provided the Centre allows the state to increase the number of seats from 60 to 500 in NIIT -West Godavari. He said in the undivided Andhra Pradesh, the state used to secure about 200 seats in NIT, Warangal.

Though a new NIT is being set up in West Godavari district, it has only 60 seats. So it will be a great loss for the students of 13 districts of AP, he lamented. Rao maintained that common admissions for institutions figured in the Schedule 10th of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and it should be continued for next 10 years. He said he had already written a letter to the Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, explaining that students were put to trouble because of loss of seats.
