Van falls into Godavari near Rajahmundry, 22 killed

In a tragic road accident, at least 22 people were killed including seven children and nine women when a van hit the road diver and fell into river Dowlaiswaram barrage near Rajahmundry in East Godavari district late Friday night.

The victims, all relatives belonging to five families, were going back to their native village in Visakhapatnam at the time of the mishap. They went on a pilgrimage to Tirumala and Goddess Sri Kanakadurga in Vijayawada.
Overspeeding is said to be the main reason behind the accident. Though the accident occurred at around 11.30 pm on Friday night, it came to light only on Saturday morning when the locals alerted the police.
Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the incident. The CM directed the East district authorities to rush to the spot and provide all help.
Deputy chief minister N Chinnarajappa rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue operations.
