GODAVARI MAHA PUSHKARALU

Congress will protest demanding a probe into the scam

Tirupati: Even as the memories of the unfortunate stampede which claimed the precious lives of close to 30 persons on the first day of the Godavari Maha Pushkaralu, are still fresh in the minds of the people, the Andhra Pradesh Congress party president N Raghuveera Reddy has come up with an allegation that Rs 1,600 crore funds meant for conducting the holy event were swindled off by the ruling party leaders and their associates.

N Raghuveera Reddy

APCC chief who reviewed the arrangements for the visit of the AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi to Anantapur district later this month, at Horsely Hills in Chittoor district, spoke to media persons on Sunday. Reddy alleged that funds meant to be spent to ensure a smooth conduct of the Godavari Maha Pushkaralu without any untoward incidents were swindled off by the ruling party leaders and their associates.

He observed that the stampede which claimed the lives of close to 30 innocent persons could have been averted had the media-savvy Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu avoided his alleged photo-shoot for the documentary being shot during the Godavari Pushkaralu festivities. 'The Chief Minister and his family members spent a lot of time while lakhs of devotees were languishing behind the grilled gates for hours together impatiently without food and water', alleged the APCC chief.

'Now Naidu is trying to hoodwink the people of the state by staying put in Rajahmundry and making vain bid to erase the haunting memories of the stampede. But our party will not spare the blunders of the ruling Telugu Desam party because of which the stampede took place in the first place. Besides we would also hold protests to demand probe into the Godavari Maha Pushkaralu scam in which 1600 crores of rupees funds were swindled off', he added.
