In East Godavari district alone, about 1.86 crore pilgrims took holy bath.On Monday forenoon, by 10 am, as many as 21,39,629 pilgrims took bath in the river in over 150 ghats in East and West Godavari districts, according to official information.

Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan, along with his wife Vimala, came by helicopter and took the dip at the Gnana Saraswathi VIP ghat in the morning. Later, he left by the same helicopter to Bhadrachalam in Telangana State. Monday and Tuesday were declared holidays for schools in the Godavari districts in view of the Maha Pushkaralu.

Holiday or no holiday, children are accompanying their parents and elders to the ghats. And Monday was no different. Following an appeal from the Chief Minister, several organisations began distributing free food packets to the visiting pilgrims at the bus stands and railway stations of Rajahmundry, Godavari and Kovvur. The number of food packets distributed is well over 12 lakh.


Water and buttermilk packets are also being distributed free of cost to the visitors, with Visakha Dairy alone accounting for 1.5 lakh buttermilk sachets a day. Cultural programmes are also drawing huge crowds at the Arts College and Anam Kalakendram here.
