Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-talked about ‘Give it up’ campaign has received lukewarm response in Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Both states do no figure in the top-10 chart in the state-wise breakup of number of customers who gave up the gas subsidy thus far.

Strangely, the data available with the gas dealers indicate that the response has been more from areas where middle class people stay. According to gas dealers, the response has been very high from areas like Malkajgiri, Nallakunta, etc, where the majority population belongs to the middle class.

In contrast, the response from areas like Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, etc, where the rich and bureaucrats stay, has not been so encouraging. The subsidy amount (for 12 cylinders) which one would be losing is less than Rs 2700 for the whole year. According to sources, Civil Supplies ministers of Telangana and AP Eatala Rajender and Paritala Sunitha, respectively, gave up their gas subsidy. Also in the list is Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha.

Also badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and shuttler Gutta Jwala responded positively to Modi's call. State-owned Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are the only three players in the domestic category in which IOC’s share is around 50 per cent. The number of Indane customers who gave their consent to ‘Give it up’ campaign in Andhra Pradesh is around 16,693, while in Telangana it is only 11,256 until Tuesday.

If we take the countrywide figures, Uttar Pradesh (1.2 lakh connections) and the national capital territory of Delhi (72,778) top the list in that order. Southern states like Karnataka (43,158 connections) is at fourth place and Tamil Nadu (34,078) is at sixth place. AP and Telangana are in 11 and 12th position.

If we take a look at district-wise scenario in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Ranga Reddy (4266) and Hyderabad (3995) are on top in Telangana, while Khammam is at the bottom with only 159 IOC customers giving up their subsidy. In case of Andhra Pradesh, drought-affected districts like Anantapur (3602) and Chittoor (3139) occupy the top two positions, while Vizianagaram (just 55 connections) is at the bottom on the list.

Among political parties, the BJP has taken a lead to contribute to this campaign. Leaders like G Kishan Reddy and K Laxman gave up their subsidy but the response at the lower rung of the party has not been so encouraging. Explaining the lack of interest from better-off sections, Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy stressed the need for a big campaign to increase the numbers.
