Hyderabad: The announcement of a special package of Rs 1.25 lakh crore to Bihar has left the political parties furious in Telangana. There is strong feeling that the Centre was deliberately denying help to the Telugu speaking States and was going back on all the assurances the UPA government had made on the floor of Parliament at the time of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

The special representative of Telangana State in New Delhi S Venugopalachari asked the Centre to give up its dual standards and do justice to both Telugu speaking States, as promised in the AP Reorganisation Act. He said the package announced for Bihar was just an election stunt to woo voters there.

While announcing a massive package without approval from any institution, the BJP government is speaking about compulsory approval from planning commission and other bodies for giving special packages, he said. TPCC President N Uttam Kumar Reddy said that during the time of bifurcation the BJP supported the AP Reorganisation Bill but the same BJP after coming to power was ignoring both AP and Telangana.

It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister, with the sole intention of attracting votes announced the special package for Bihar. The Congress demands that the Centre implement all the promises made by the UPA government at the time of passing the Bill. “The Modi government has legal obligation to fulfil the commitments made to Telangana in the Bill,” he added.

BJP MLC, N Ramachandra Rao however said that BJP will never neglect the Telugu States, The Centre had earmarked Rs 8,000 crore for Telangana in the 2015-16 budget. Besides, this all the State government schemes were being supported by the Centre including Swacch Hyderabad and Grama Jyothi.

The BJP supported bifurcation of the State and it was committed to help the new State and there will be no deviation. There have been no new proposals from the Telangana government hence the Centre cannot be blamed for it. “The State government has not forwarded any proposals for new projects, even though Centre is ready to support it,” Rao said.

Taking a dig at the Central government's decision to grant special package for Bihar, the CPI Telangana unit said it was 'election package' rather than 'special package'. They also demanded that Modi make similar announcement for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. CPI State secretary Chada Venkat Reddy said that the Modi’s decision ahead of Assembly polls displays political interest rather than public interest. He said the Centre was resorting to double standards.

Meanwhile, political parties in Andhra Pradesh fumed over the special package to Bihar. According to the opposition parties while State government was trying to hoodwink people by continuing to say that they were putting pressure on the Centre in regard to the issue of special status, the Prime Minister was maintaining stoic silence.

YSRCP leader Umareddy Venkateswarlu accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of mortgaging the interest of Andhra Pradesh with the Centre for political gains. Another leader Botcha Satyanarayana said BJP government has made it clear that it has no sincerity in implementing the promises. If Centre had the will they would have found a way to accord special status just as they had announced massive package to Bihar.

APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy said the Andhra Pradesh government has once again failed in getting necessary funds from the Centre. For narrow political gains it refuses to fight for special status and has even failed in getting a special package. He said the Chief Minister should explain why he could not make the PM announce any special package for AP.

The BJP was refusing to implement the assurances given by the UPA government in parliament, he added. The CPI State secretary, K Ramakrishna emphasised the need to intensify agitation for forcing the Centre to come to the rescue of AP.
