Chittoor: The entire Rayalaseema region is in the grip of dengue fever. Out of 1175 cases reported from across the Andhra Pradesh state till August 24, as many 1022 cases are from Rayalaseema. Chittoor district tops with 669 dengue cases followed by Anantapur with 179 cases.
The other districts where dengue has been spreading are YSR Kadapa district with 160 cases, Kurnool 14, Krishna 44, Guntur 19, East Godavari 8, Vizag 1, Vizianagaram 6 and one case was reported from Srikakulam since January this year, reveals official data. According to Dr S Aruna Kumari, Director of Health Department Hyderabad, due to the scarcity of drinking water in Chittoor district people were storing water for many days in an unscientific manner resulting in breeding of dengue mosquito.
A Large number of cases have been reported from Madanapalli and Punganoor areas in Chittoor district, she said. Speaking to The Hans India, Dr M Geyanad, Member Legislative Council from Anantapur, said that it was a fact that dengue cases were on the rise in Rayalaseema.
He said the drought conditions had resulted in people storing water in whatever manner they could and this had become a major source of breeding ground for mosquitoes. A massive campaign should be taken up by the civic organizations as well as government to educate the people on preventive methods, he said.
When asked about the measures the government is taking to tackle the situation, Dr Aruna said for the first time the health department was utilising ‘NS1’ test kits to detect dengue. She said this kit helps in diagnosing within two days. Around 2000 NS1 test kits were distributed across the state three weeks ago.
As there is no vaccine for the disease, Dr Aruna said the best way to prevent dengue is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. She advised the people to keep the surroundings clean and keep the water containers clean. In addition, people should use insect repellents and mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites and should wear long-sleeved clothes and trousers while going outdoors.
According to official figures, since January 2015 to date, 14472 malaria cases were reported in the state. However, Chikungunya cases have registered a downward trend from 122 cases in 2014 to 20 cases in 2015, Dr Aruna said.
