Vijayawada/Hyderabad: The people of villages near Machilipatnam held a massive protest on Friday on the National Highway 214 opposing the State government’s move to acquire 30,000 acres for Machilipatnam Port and industrial hub. They raised slogans against the move and were against giving their lands for the industrial hub.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting with Minister for Excise Kollu Ravindra and Machilipatnam MP Konakalla Narayana Rao at the Assembly Hall in Hyderabad and asked the two leaders to hold direct consultations with the people and convince them to give their lands.

The Chief Minister also promised to extend the package given to the farmers of the capital villages, if the people of Machilipatnam offer 5,000 acres for the port and 25,000 acres for the industrial hub. The Chief Minister said that Machilipatnam would be developed into a port city and also industrial city and that would change the living standards of the people.

He wanted the Minister and the MP to meet the people in person and explain to them the intentions of the government in taking their lands and ensure that they are convinced. The proposed industrial hub would bring more industries both in the private and government sectors, the Chief Minister said and directed the Minister and the MP to tell the people that the government is willing to give the package that was given to the farmers of the 29 capital villages.

Even as the Chief Minister was holding a meeting in Hyderabad with the MP and the Minister, the people from Pothepalli, Pedakaragraharam and other villages took part in a protest on the highway. Former legislator and YSR Congress leader Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), who addressed the people said that he would stand by them and protect their lands and houses from being forcibly taken by the government for industries.

He said that people in Machilipatnam were ready to give their lands for the port, but not for the industries. As the people squatted on the road and held protest, the traffic on the Kathipudi-Ongole NH 214 was disrupted for a couple of hours. The police had a tough time in clearing the traffic after the people withdrew their protest.
