Rajahmundry: At least 16 labourers were killed and 10 injured when a construction material-laden truck they had boarded overturned on Monday on the National Highway-16 near Gandepalli village in East Godavari district. All the deceased were identified as daily labourers hailing from Thondangi, Prathipadu, Shankavaram and Routhulapudi mandals in district.

They had gone to Chintalapudi mandal in neighboring West Godavari district for palm plantation work about 19 days back. According to District Collector H Arun Kumar, about 35 labourers were travelling by the 12-tyre truck which was going from Dachepalli in Guntur district to Visakhapatnam, police said, adding that the driver must have either been in an inebriated condition or fell asleep.

According to those who were injured, the driver had applied sudden brake on the outskirts of Gandepalli about 25 kilometers from Rajahmundry. The truck skidded and overturned and 16 labourers who were sleeping on the ash load got buried under the ash. Both the driver and cleaner were absconding after the mishap, Kumar said.

Ten people have sustained injuries in the accident and all of them are out of danger. They have been admitted to a government hospital in Rajahmundry.The Gandepalli police and Jaggampeta Inspector GVV Satyanarayana rushed to the spot and started rescue operations like pulling out bodies from the ash and also searching for missing persons.

Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu visited the spot and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and house sites. Observing that the government has initiated several measures to prevent road accidents, he said such tragedies often happen due to over-speeding and the drivers not being alert.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and YSRCP chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy expressed grief over the death of daily workers.Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa, Information and Public Relations Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy also rushed to the Rajahmundry Government Hospital and met the injured.

Jagan also visited the hospital and consoled the relatives of the deceased. He said the government should hold responsibility for the accident as the fly-ash in the lorry which met with the accident belongs to AP Genco.
