Visakhapatnam: It appears that the resurgence of Maoists on the Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) seems to be taking place after a long gap of five years.

The outlawed CPI-Maoists kidnapped three Telugu Desam Party (TDP) local leaders of GK Veedhi in the Vizag Agency late on Monday night by branding them as supporters of the proposed bauxite mining in the agency.

The kidnapped persons were identified as GK Veedhi Mandal party president M Balaiah Padal, senior leader V Balaiah and district committee member M Mahesh. The trio was allegedly taken away by the Maoists from their homes in GK Veehi, Kothagudem and Kothuru areas.

Following this, the police has sounded alert and intensified combing operations in the AOB area mandals Sitampeta, Kotturu, Bhamini, Mandasa, Meliaputti in Srikakulam district on Tuesday.

According to the police, the Maoists had been moving actively in the name of AOB committee in the border area mandals and adjacent areas in Odisha state at Thivva Hills, Kalingadal project catchment area and Dabarusingi area.

CPI-Maoist East Division Secretary Kailasam released a letter on Tuesday at Seeleru in the Vizag Agency demanding the government to stop the plans of taking up bauxite mining in the agency, withdraw the security forces (BSF, CRPF and APSP) from all the pockets and restore the rights of the tribals.

Top police officials said the three TD leaders had gone to Maoists’ meeting voluntarily at Gondipalle on Monday morning following the call from their leaders and did not return to their homes so far.

However, the kidnapped persons have sent a letter to their respective villages stating that the government should stop mining and combing operations in the area immediately otherwise their lives would be in jeopardy.

HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Vizag (Rural) SP Koyya Praveen took stock of the situation. “Tribal employees’ union leaders will appeal for their release on Wednesday.

The police have already withdrawn combing operations long ago,’’ the minister said without making any comment on their demands.

Meanwhile, tense situation is prevailing in the agency with armed police seen at all the check posts. The AOB region has been witnessing several such incidents for the last one month.

A tribal was kidnapped and released later. Around 400 armed activists entered Munchingput, Rangabayulu and Giorrapeda village recently.
