Kurnool: Considering the large population of Muslims in many areas in the district, Chief Minister N Chanbrababu Naidu has sanctioned an Urdu university for them. The district administration has initiated steps to establish the university allocating 400 acres near B Thandrapadu in Kurnool mandal.
The steps have been welcomed by Muslims who number about seven lakh in Kurnool town, Nandyal, Banaganapalli, Adoni, Velugodu, Atmakur, Mantralayam, Allagadda mandals. Naidu promised to set up the university when he attended the first Independence Day celebrations in the new State.
As Muslim families are big and financially not so sound they remained educationally backward. Most of them limit to study up to graduation, in spite of the interest to pursue higher studies, in the absence of Urdu medium at higher level. Members of such families have been forced to abandon study and take up work under the MGNREGS, says Kurnool YSRCP leader Asif Khan.
Only those with sound financial background have been able to go for higher studies. Keeping these points in view Muslim elders have been pressing for an Urdu varsity. Such varsities are located in Hyderabad, Lucknow in UP, Kalaburgi in Karnataka and in Kashmir. The elders are hopeful that the fate of Muslims will turn for better with Naidu’s decision to set up Urdu university.
The TDP leaders point out that the government decision will bestow innumerable benefits to the district, according to local TDP leader Mallela Rajasekhar. The number of students coming here to pursue higher studies not only from the district but other areas in the State and elsewhere will rise substantially.
If the varsity is able to attract foreign students for higher studies of PG and Ph D the district will gain financially.
