Nellore: Heavy rains continue to lash Chittoor, Nellore and Kadapa districts killing nine people, including four children, and damaging crops over thousands of acres. As a result of the heavy downpour, dozens of villages were inundated and road and rail transport was disrupted.
Five deaths were reported from Chittoor while two people were missing. Flash floods also claimed the lives of 80 cattle and damaged 80 houses. For the second day, all educational institutions in Chittoor district declared a holiday. River, rivulets, tanks and streams in the affected districts overflowed. Traffic between Vijayawada and Chennai came to a halt as a part of Chennai-Kolkata national highway was washed away in Nellore district. The highway at Naidupeta-Sullurpeta was also flooded, disrupting vehicular traffic between Tirupati and Kanchipuram.
For a second time in three days, the Mumbai-Nellore highway was breached by authorities to make way for flood water which had entered some villages.
The Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who reviewed the situation announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for those killed due to recent rains. Minister for Municipal Administration P Narayana told reporters in Nellore that two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters had been kept ready in Chennai to rescue people stranded by flood waters in Nellore. Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were pressed into service in Nellore district. The authorities have shifted 5,000 people to relief camps.
Eight mandals in Chittoor district received 20 cm rainfall during the last 24 hours. Some places in Nellore district received as high as 30 cm rainfall.
In Tirupati, Auto Nagar, Kormenigunta, Lakshmipuram, STV Nagar, Rajiv nagar and Thimminaidupalem also came under knee deep water in the rains. About 2000 people were evacuated from the rain hit areas and sheltered in TTD Srinivasam pilgrim complex, Kalyana mandapams and municipal schools.
A house in Gopalraju colony collapsed in the city resulting in injuries to two. Another person identified as Mani died of electric shock in Rajiv Nagar. However, the people of the pilgrim city heaved a sigh of relief with the respite in the heavy rains on Tuesday. The day was passed with no heavy rains except for a brief 30-45 minute moderate rain and intermittent drizzles
The situation was equally bad in Kadapa district as heavy rains threw life out of gear. Schools remained closed for second consecutive day.
