Nellore: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has expressed his anger over officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and blamed the breaching of tanks and damaging bunds to the ‘sub-standard’ works carried out by the officials in the past.

During his visit to Nellore on Saturday to assess the damage caused by recent heavy rains, a visibly angered Naidu admonished officials for the technical lapses and erratic designs of the past.

“Projects designed during British Raj are still robust and have endured many floods. But the recently built projects lack mechanism to face any flood-like situation. This is unfortunate,” he thundered while inspecting ongoing works at the breach on the National Highway at Manubole.

The Chief Minister had a piece of advice for the officials: natural disasters can be tackled if there is enough preparedness among official machinery, and technology can of great use in mitigating the human and property loss.

Then, he visited Sarvepalli Reservoir to inspect the damaged infrastructure. He assured that a huge system, especially a water-storage facility, would in place soon to ensure that water levels remain at safety levels. He also said plans were afoot to link Penna with Krishna River to provide additional benefits to farmers in the region. To assess the damage suffered by farmers, he said teams of three to five officials would visit every village in 22 mandals to get the real picture on the ground.
