Hyderabad: The ambitious programme by the department of higher education to rank education institutes has turned sour. Much to the disappointment of the department most polytechnic and degree colleges fared poor. As many as 80 out of 341 engineering colleges in AP have not furnished their details regarding key performance indicators to grade them accordingly.

The periodical evaluation of KPIs is undertaken in a bid to improve quality of the colleges apart from rating them. Performance appraisal of 261 engineering colleges in the State was carried out, on the basis of five parameters. These include; admissions, accreditation parameters, results, industrial training and campus placements. Of the apprised institutions, only 62 could be ranked as ‘A’, while104 are ranked as ‘B’, 62 as ‘C’ and 10 as ‘D’.

Similarly, when a total of 81 polytechnic colleges in the State were evaluated, only 25 have been ranked under category ‘A’, while 36 colleges ranked as ‘B’ and 10 colleges each have been ranked as ‘C’ and ‘D’. However, it is sad to note that both government and private degree colleges showed poor performance. Out of 143 government colleges only 11, and out of 117 private aided degree colleges only 8 have been ranked as ‘A’.

Only 42 government colleges and 33 private aided colleges were ranked under ‘B’ while the rest were under C and D grades. Following a pale picture from degree colleges, the higher education department scheduled a series of review meetings with college principals during November and December at different parts of the State. These efforts were meant to go into micro details with institution wise performance on the KPIs.

The next meeting scheduled on November 24 at Vijayawada will focus on infrastructure development, accreditation, capacity building, faculty training, skill development, results, placements with an ensured quality outcome, internships for students with industry, and others. Details of grading of institutions are available online and the officials state that the main objective is to create a sense of competition among the higher education institutions.
