Tirupati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stated that the State government will undertake linking of Penna and Krishna Rivers via Somasila Project. He also reiterated that Nadula Anusandhanam (inter-linking of rivers) will be pursued to make State drought-free. Naidu interacted with locals and media in his native Naravaripalli, on Friday.

“Even though the State government is supporting agriculture by providing loans, seeds, fertilizers etc, the scarcity of water is making the activity un-remunerative for farmers. In a bid to solve the problem, we have taken up the task of providing water on priority. Pattiseema project was in record time and will soon take up linking of Krishna and Penna rivers,” he declared.

In this connection Naidu claimed that the implementation of Neeru-Chettu programme is paying good dividends, with water bodies like tanks, farm ponds, check dams and percolation tanks brimming with water after recent rains. “These water bodies were rejuvenated under the programme and we have increased their storage capacity. Rains gave a huge confidence boost. The prospect of good crops brightened,” he averred.

Following the success of Neeru-Chettu, a new initiative ‘Panta Sanjivini’ is mooted, which will enable the farmers to continue agriculture even in adverse conditions like drought. Detailing about the new initiative Naidu said, “The government would support the farmers to take up initiative for water harvesting and recharging of ground water. This is to facilitate the farmers to cultivate crops even in case of dry spell.” The CM stated that smart water grid would be set up to keep track of availability of water. “The new system will provide minute details of the water availability like the quantum of water available in the dams and other water bodies, ground water level, etc,” he said adding that it would go a long way in evolving a perfect plan for agriculture development.

Naidu did not miss the opportunity to stress upon the farmers to fine tune their agriculture. He advised them to branch out other means like poultry, dairy and aquaculture. He also stressed on the need to adopt modern methods including introducing drip and sprinkler systems even if there is more water available, to minimise water usage and also changing crop pattern by taking up inter crops to make agriculture profitable.

He asserted that the government on its part extending all support in the form of welfare schemes to the people. Minister for Forest and Environment Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy, MP N Siva Prasad, District Collector Sidharth Jain and others were also present.
