Kakinada: With special focus on save power, generated in conventional process and more emphasis on non-conventional mode, ‘solar power rooftop system’ is being given top priority as far as requirements of government offices are concerned in Kakinada city.

In the forefront to achieve smart city status, the government department offices in Kakinada city will be provided with rooftop solar system to generate 5 MW power under area based development (ABD) with a cost of Rs 40 crore under ‘Surya Mitra’ programme.

The required funding for implementation will be provided by Union government under Clean Energy Fund (CEF). A total 5.17 lakh square feet space of government offices will be covered on implementation in Kakinada city alone.

Under this process, the solar power rooftop system will be installed in all government offices to generate 5MW power. In this mode of installation, the excess power after meeting the requirements of the offices, will be transmitted to State grid through the arrangement at the time of installation.

On their part, the government offices will have to pay Rs 6.50 paise per unit as against Rs 8 payable under present commercial tariff.

Apart from the government offices, the Kakinada Municipal Corporation too intends to develop this solar rooftop system in Division-1 in Kakinada city in the first phase. It will extend the same to rooftops of various apartments and buildings in second and subsequent phases.

On its part, the implementing agency NREDCAP, East Godavari unit, has taken up training for 30 technicians, all qualified diploma holders to install the solar rooftop system.

The East Godavari NREDCAP district manager, G Satyanarayana, and executive engineer J Nani Babu said that they were expecting the release of funds in December to install the equipment on various government office buildings. They thanked the District Collector, H Arun Kumar, for taking special care for installation of the equipment on government office buildings.
