Machilipatnam: A 42-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Ramannapeta village in Krishna district on Sunday, police said. P Basavaiah killed self at his field. He was distraught over his crop being lost, Chandarlapadu SI K Durgaprasad said. The farmer had two acres of land and took another two acres (land) on lease. He had borrowed Rs 4 lakh from private money lenders, the officer said. He was, however, unable to clear the dues as the cotton crop did not yield. Prima facie, these circumstances could have forced him to take the extreme step, Durgaprasad said.
