The weekend saw hike in price of flowers by 50 per cent

Flower vendors in the city are making best use of the idiom, ‘Make hay while the sun shines’. As the auspicious Karthika Masam has many muhurats for various ceremonies, the flower venders have hiked the rate of the flowers, which are extensively used in pooja, marriages and other ceremonies. The prices of all varieties of flowers have been doubled.

The decision to hike the price of flowers delivered a double whammy to middle class, who are wresting hike in price of vegetables and essential commodities. With many rituals and ceremonies slated to happen on Monday, the prices skyrocketed on the weekend.
Speaking to The Hans India, SK Zakeer Basha, a flower vendor said that price of flowers will fluctuate. “Nobody can predict what would be the price of the flowers for the evening. On regular days, there is hardly any profit. Its on these special occasions, where there is a demand the prices rise. This weekend the price of flowers rose by 50 per cent,” he added.

The flowers which are extensively used for pooja and decoration of houses are the chrysanthemum (chamanthi), marigold (banthi), kanakambaram and rose. While the normal weekday’s price of chrysanthemum is Rs 50 per kilo, now it is sold for Rs 100. The otherwise Rs 40 per kilo, marigolds are now Rs 100 and a bunch of roses are being sold for Rs 250 against Rs 50 and Rs 80 (depending on the quality). Kanakambaram flowers are usually sold for Rs 400 a kilo but one can buy them for Rs 900 to 1000 during this season. Small sized roses (country variety) are being sold for a whopping Rs 300 per kilo.
