Chittoor: Chandrasekhar alias Chintu, the main accused in the sensational double murder case of Chittoor Mayor K Anuradha and her husband K Mohan, surrendered in the court here on Monday. IV Class Junior Munsif Magistrate of the Chittoor Court Yugandhar remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.

The unexpected surrender of Chintu created ripples in the city. According to judicial sources, the accused arrived at the court at 11am on Monday accompanied by Yoganand, his advocate and submitted his representation to surrender in the court.

At the same time, Chittoor SP G Srinivas was holding a press conference at the Police Guest House in connection with the arrest of three accused in the double-murder case.

Later, the police rushed to the court with big force after getting to know about Chintu’s surrender. In-charge Mayor Subramanyam and several corporators of the city flocked the court within minutes demanding hanging of the accused Chintu.

They raised slogans before the court to announce capital punishment without further delay for his brutal murder. For some time, it became difficult for the police to keep the angry mob and had to resort to mild lathi-charge to bring things under control.

Later, in response to the request filed by the Chittoor police, the magistrate accorded permission to police to take Chintu into their custody for one week. The sympathisers of the slain leaders made efforts to attack the accused, while Chintu was coming out of the court. However, the police managed to avert any untoward incident. It is learnt that Chintu was hiding in Chittoor or Tirupati after the murder of the Mayor on November 17.
