Chittoor: District In-charge Minister P Narayana expressed his dismay over the engineers of minor irrigation department and municipal corporation for their ineffective strategy in preserving the water sources in Chittoor town. Reviewing the impact of heavy rains, which lashed the city on Sunday, the minister made it clear that it was a good opportunity to use the abundant water storage in several tanks . District Collector Siddarth Jain has tried to explain the steps taken by the irrigation engineers to avert the breaches of several tanks in the district. The minister said that NTR Jalasayam, the only permanent drinking water scheme for Chittoor town, is brimming with water, thanks to rains. “Now, it is the duty of the municipal engineers to supply drinking water to Chittoor town every day for 365 days through NTR Jalasayam”, he said.

The government used to spend crores of rupees on the transportation of water to Chittoor town, which could be averted now, he added. When the municipal engineers expressed their inability to provide water throughout the year, the minister instructed Panduranga Rao, chief engineer in the municipal corporation, to come to Chittoor and see the water storage in NTR Jalasayam. It is ridiculous on the part of the municipal and irrigation engineers for not taking effective measures to supply drinking water, he pointed out. The repairs of the pipelines should be finished within a week, he directed. Pandu Ranga Rao would draft the planning of usage of NTR Jalaysam waters in a proper way, he added.

Addressing the media here on Sunday after convening a review meeting with the officials concerned, the minister felt that effective measures would be initiated to mitigate the drinking water scarcity of Chittoor by using the available water sources . He said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has already instructed District Collector Siddarth Jain to develop a comprehensive planning for preserving the surplus water in the tanks as well in minor irrigation projects. Chittoor MLA Satyaprabha has explained the steps being taken by the municipal corporation for mitigating the water demand of the town during the past two years. The minister then examined various tanks in the town, along with the District Collector and and Chittoor MLA Satya Prabha.
