Party district committee secretary B Balaram on Sunday alleged that the government had evacuated the tribals of Anguluru village in Devipatnam mandal without paying any compensation. “Tribals in Devaragondi, Mamidigondi and Thotagondi are yet to be allotted the promised land and houses, which were offered as compensation. The situation is more or less the same in Chegondapalli village. The officials are threatening the tribals with the police force,” he alleged.
“More than 400 villages would be inundated and about 80,000 people would be rendered homeless because of the project. But the official records put the number of villages only at 300. The government was deliberately skewing the exact number of villages facing the threat of inundation,” he alleged.
He pointed that the Polavaram project is a national project and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act should be implemented to ensure justice to the displaced. He also demanded package under the Act to be extended to people above 18 years of age. The CPM district committee secretary also demanded the government to construct colonies for the displaced. The State government paid Rs 30 lakh per acre for the displaced in the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS), he said, adding that same compensation should be given to the displaced in the Polavaram Project.
