Ganapavaram: Demanding the State government to supply water to their standing crops in Godavari Western Delta, scores of farmers blocked the road at Kesavaram Centre in Ganapavaram mandal on Friday. The agitation disrupted traffic movement for few hours.

Led by the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS), the aggrieved farmers from Appannapeta, Kesavaram, Jalli Kakinada, Sagupadu and Ardhavaram took to the streets as part of their desperate attempt to salvage their standing crops. They squatted on the arterial road in a symbolic protest against the alleged non-release of water to their ayacut areas at a crucial time when water was urgently required to sustain the standing crops. They demanded the officials to come to their rescue to protect their standing crops from withering.

Speaking on the occasion, the APRS district president B Balaram alleged that the government did not take any steps to supply water to the nurseries in Godavari delta, which resulted in several acres of crops withering. He demanded the government to supply water to all acres in the region.

Later, he spoke to Deputy Engineer of Irrigation over phone and told the farmers that the official had assured to release water to affected villages within a day. The farmers warned that they would have to again take to the streets if they did not get water for their crops. Andhra Pradesh Koulu Rythu Sangh (APKRS) leaders Dhanikonda Srinivas, Patnal Srinivas, Nukavarapu Malleswara Rao and others participated in the protest.
