Visakhapatnam: Students of Aditya Degree College and members of various students organisations, including SFI, went berserk damaging the glasses and furniture of the college located at Rama Talkies Road area in the city on Saturday. The students were angry over the death of second degree student of the college K Priyanka Prasad, which they said, happened due to the negligence of the college management.

Priyanka, daughter of Subernath Prasad, a native of Bihar and a pushcart vendor, died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday. The leaders of the students’ organisations alleged that Priyanka complained of dizziness and weakness, but three lecturers of the college admonished her by saying that she was finding an excuse to get out of the college to meet her boy friend. After some time, she fell unconscious and even then the teachers did not shift her to a hospital, the student leaders alleged. After half- an-hour, she was shifted to a hospital by her father and classmates, but she was declared brought dead due to dehydration.

The issue erupted again on Saturday when the students and the parents of the deceased gathered at the college and started raising slogans against the administration demanding action against the faculty. They also demanded compensation to the family members of the deceased. The violence began soon after the management allegedly refused to pay the compensation of Rs 10 lakh.

As the situation was going out of control, the Dwaraka police station personnel rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors. City president of SFI USN Raju said that the police were hand-in-glove with the management of the college and threatened the students and parents of the girl not to lodge a complaint against the management. Raju said that they will approach city police chief Amit Garg as they have lost faith in police belonging to Dwaraka police station.

Talking to The Hans India, inspector of Dwaraka police station A Shanmukha Rao said that he called parents of the girl, college management and the student leaders to the police station in the morning and told them to lodge complaints if they have any. However, the activists are yet to lodge any complaint so far and no arrests were made, he said.
