Pithapuram (East Godavari): The police arrested 13 KSEZ Vyatireka Porata Committee (KSEZVPC) activists on Saturday.

The arrested were identified as VPC president Bavisetty Narayana Swamy alias Pedakapu, secretary Chinta Suryanarayana Murthy,

members Jyotula Babulu, Ravi Sattibabu and nine others. They were produced in the local court and were sent to remand.

It may be recalled here that the KSEZVPC called for a meeting of KSEZ-affected farmers of both Tondangi and U Kothapalli mandal on

December 29 at Srirampuram. It is said these arrests were made as preventive measure to foil the meet.

Meanwhile, former Minister Mudragada Padmanabham, who has been supporting the cause of the farmers, is expected to attend the

farmers’ meet on December 29. The farmers have been demanding the government to return their lands as promised byChief Minister N

Chandrababu Naidu (then in Opposition) in December 2012 during his visit to KSEZ areas on Yeruvaka Yatra.

Besides this, the farmers are also referring to Land Acquisition Act 2013 by Centre, which states that acquired lands if unused for the

purpose within five years’ time frame should be returned to land owners.

When contacted Kakinada sub division police officer Suryadevara Venkateswara Rao confirmed the arrests on Saturday evening.
