Vijayawada: Call money scam interlinked with sexual favours has shaken the city, which was astonished to have learned about the dark side of the micro finance business this year.
Involvement of the bigwigs from political, State government and retired officers in the scam has come in as a blow to the common people as well as the victims who suffered grave threat for life and respect.
Before the scam was unearthed, city woke up to illicit liquor claiming lives of five daily wage workers of Krishna Lanka. Following the incident, former MLA Malladi Vishnu along with his family had gone underground and appeared at temple cities Tirupati and Shirdi before getting anticipatory bail.
Another such scam that affected public at large is the manufacturing of spurious ghee and spice powders in the city. Crores of rupees worth masala powders, more than 2,000 litres of ghee were seized by the police.
Owing to important VIP movement in the city and capital region, the police had to arrange for escort services apart from their routine work including maintenance of law and order.
As a result, many chain snatchers plunged into action. On a single day, about six chain snatching cases were registered at various police stations in the city limits.
In August, a girl was gang raped under the Machavaram Police Station limits and a burglary under Patamata Police Station limits was reported wherein Rs 50 lakh worth valuables were stolen from a house at RTC Colony.
In September, a Bengali minor was raped by a few youth at Kanuru under the Penamaluru Police Station jurisdiction.Meanwhile, former woman cricketer Durga Bhavani committed suicide and police couldn’t establish a proper reason behind it.
The murder and rape case of Himabindu who is considered as the Nirbhaya of Vijayawada was closed due to lack of evidence against the accused. The police were blamed for lethargic investigation in that particular case.
