Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government had requested the Central government to increase its cadre strength in the light of the bifurcation.

DGP J V Ramudu told media persons, here on Thursday that the State government had written to the Centre to increase the All India Services officers by 30 per cent. The State now has the strength of 79 officers and sought 30 per cent more, he added.

He further said that a representation was given to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh during the latter’s recent visit to the State.

He expressed confidence that the Central government would take a decision shortly and address the shortage of officers issue.

Referring to the priorities of the State police in 2016, the DGP said that their first priority was to bring down the number of road accidents in the State.

He said that Guntur, East Godavari and Chittoor topped in road accident deaths during 2015, while the Krishna, East Godavari and Visakhapatnam topped in number of fatal accidents. Police have procured six interception vehicles to keep a regular check on traffic violators, he added.

The DGP said that these vehicles would rein in speeding vehicles, drunken driving and also to penalise those who do not have driving license.

These GPS-enabled vehicles were given to various districts to be operated both on the State and National Highways, he added. Police would also work to bring down crime against women, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, the DGP said.
